7 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

With summer in full swing, now is the time to explore! Camping, trail riding, all things outdoors! Before you blow and go, it’s important to revisit some safety ground rules that will ensure a successful and enjoyable experience with your Intimidator UTV.

1. WEAR YOUR HELMET

Helmet technology has come a long way over the past five years. Although there are many types and styles out there, don’t sacrifice looks for safety. Some helmet types include:

  • FULL FACE

  • MODULAR (flip up)

  • OPEN FACE

  • HALF HELMET

  • OFF ROAD

  • DUAL SPORT

Remember that many states require off-road riders to wear a certified helmet. Even if your state does not require one, a certified helmet is always a good idea. (Especially for young riders.)

2. EYE PROTECTION

Sunglasses alone just won’t cut the mustard. Recently, one of our customer’s sons had to go to the eye doctor when a mosquito flew into his eye. A mosquito wing had to be surgically removed! The doctor said this is typical if you don’t wear eye protection. Some goggles are even tinted, protecting you from harmful UV rays. You only have two eyes - protect them at all costs!

3. LONG SLEEVES AND PANTS

Resist the temptation to wear shorts and short sleeves. Clothing technology and design has come a long way as well, with wicking technology that keeps you cool, even with long sleeves and pants. These can help protect you from tree branches whipping back at you, a thorn bush, as well as many other things you may encounter. Protect your body from all of these unknown elements.

4. GLOVES

Many times on the trail, just having that additional grip while holding the steering wheel can prevent many mishaps. There are also many styles designed for hot weather.

5. CLOSED-TOE SHOES OR BOOTS

Wearing flip flops or open-toed shoes can be a setup for disaster. Many side-by-side drivers think that just because they are in a partially or fully-enclosed cab, that their feet are ok. You never know when you’ll have to get out to clear the trail, or even attend to a flat tire or other maintenance issue. We even recommend wearing over the ankle boots if possible. If your feet get hurt, the trip is over. Protect those puppies!

6. SUNSCREEN

If you do wind up in a precarious situation where you experience an unplanned detour or tumble, realize that anything you can wear to protect your skin and your body can minimize injury, or even save your life. This includes sunscreen! Wear it - don’t bare it!

7. HYDRATION, BREAKS, SHADE

Believe it or not, you usually sweat more than you realize it when you’re riding your UTV in the hot summer months. The loss of water and electrolytes can lead to major dehydration! Always bring enough water! As a rule of thumb, plan to bring a lot more than you think you need. Staying hydrated will help keep you focused and will cause you to be able to react more quickly to the demands of the trail. A great option is to wear a hands-free hydration system to where you can drink while you drive.

Also, don’t forget to take breaks along the way. Some trails can be extremely long and demanding. Regardless, you are constantly scanning for hazards, maneuvering your UTV left to right and up and down. If you don’t take frequent breaks you can lose focus and energy, causing your ride to be unenjoyable and potentially dangerous.

The temperature difference between sunny and shady areas is amazing. In the shade, you may feel 10-15 degrees cooler even though the temperature is the same in both areas. Shade feels cooler mainly because you are avoiding solar radiation. Hydrate, take frequent breaks, and get in the shade as much as possible.
